Can You Use Echo Show as a Baby Monitor?

9:39 pm by Hawkins Grant

The Echo Show can be used as a baby monitor just as much as it can double up as a security camera in your home. However, there are other benefits that come with a baby monitor that may not be available in the Echo show such as insights on how to help the baby sleep better; some baby monitors come incorporated with an over the crib mounting feature so that you can get a larger field of view of your baby in the crib and part of the areas surrounding the crib.

Another important feature is the night vision capability, which might mean that you have to leave the lights on as the baby sleeps, so as we continue moving away from hearing the baby to seeing the infant engage their peaceful night or day sleep, the Echo show can come in handy but remember that for the device to work you have to install Wi-Fi.

Eco show is not a baby monitor perse but it does have some qualities that are better than that of a baby monitor, for example, it can act as an intercom and allow two-way communications through video. You will also rarely experience disconnection problems mainly caused by the Wi-Fi subscription package, and sometimes baby monitors experience difficulties connecting with the Wi-Fi signals that go through many walls.

So with baby monitors, parents have to do in-depth research in comparison to their homes, the layout, the electrical gadgets that are within the house and what the walls are made of, in essence, is that baby monitors are not a one size fits all type of equipment, the above does not, however, apply to the echo show.

How the Echo Show works as a baby monitor

Echo Show can be the perfect baby monitor apart from the fact that it can double up as a security camera and an intercom for communication while at work. So to install the Echo Show as a baby monitor in your home, you will have to invest in at least two of the devices, one that you will put in the baby’s room and the other that you will use as a monitor.

The next step could be a little hard to achieve and this concerns positioning because you need to position it strategically so that the baby is the field of view. Then you can set up video calling or use the drop-in from show A to show B to monitor the baby. The drop-in feature via Amazon Alexa allows you to drop in from any location with your Smartphone.

So even if you leave your child with your nanny, you can easily drop in from time to time to check on the progress of the baby, whether he/she is sleeping, feeding or playing. Mind you the drop-in feature is not limited to your home but you can also use it to drop in your parents or friend’s homes and remember the Alexa drop-in feature is via video.

Enabling drop-in

Before you enable a drop in first ensure that your echo device is hooked up and you have downloaded the echo application. In the Alexa app, you will proceed to sign up for Alexa messaging and calling, you will then proceed to tap the communicate button which looks like a little speech-bubble and then proceed to sign up.

After the above you will have to ensure that drop-in has been enabled in your account, so you will go to the profile icon located at the top and on the right side of the screen, and then tap on my communication settings just below your name then tap on allow drop-in toggle and proceed to confirm.

Initiating a drop in call within your home

For this process, Alexa should be at her best, with the relevant Wi-Fi signals strengths, so though you might be tempted to perform this process with your smartphone the simple and most effective way is through Alexa and all you need to do is ask her to drop in on a device that is located in the baby’s nursery.

Use the Echo show with an already installed Wi-Fi security cam

The advantage of using the Wi-Fi security cameras is that they offer a wider field of view from the door and around the toddler’s room, and they are fairly priced, durable, and highly functional. Since the security cameras are from different manufacturers, instructions to pair with the echo show will be provided by the manufacturer.

Find the best position to mount your camera and be sure to capture the door and the room’s window given that they can be used as entry and exit points and once the two devices have paired just voice the relevant command and Alexa will do the honors.

The advantage of using the second-generation Echo show is that it has incorporated eight microphones such that your voice can be clearly heard by Alexa even if you are playing music, the device also enables a far-field technology. So if you decide to settle with the Echo Show second generation, you will also get a Wyze cam 1080p HD indoor camera.

The above will provide you with two way live video streams complete with audio and notifications. Additionally the set up is compatible with the Zigbee smart home devices, meaning you will not need a separate hub.

Conclusion

Baby sleep monitors offer peace of mind to the new mothers, whether the baby is sleeping or when they are at work and they have left their toddlers with the nannies. The Echo show ensures that you keep a keen eye on your baby safely and in a secure fashion, and the best part of it all is that the smart display can double up as a security cam and you can use it to communicate with your much older kids.

So all you need to do is connect your live camera to Alexa and receive a live realtime feed on your Echo Show. Set up on your phone is a three-step simple process, just download the manufacturer’s app and you will be guided on the installation process.

He reiterates that older folks are having a hard time inviting the new technology into their homes when they need it more than the other age groups. According to Hawkins, smart devices are not only a lifesaver but they are economical, and as innovation continues to take center stage in the home appliances, it is his sincere hope that the information compiled will reach the right audience and encourage change.
